Pen-y-Gent Walk

A one and a half hour drive to Horton in Ribblesdale preceeded the walk which was attended by 10 intrepid explorers. A recent new member , Helen, provided a smiling face as she attended for her first group walk.

A mobile phone call was received at 11:00 AM from a missing intrepid explorer appologising for his absence and explaining that he had only just woken up. He didn’t mention a hangover but he did state that he had been to a wedding the day before. No names are mentioned here.

Pen-y-Gent is 2273 feet high (or 694 metres for those of you who prefer metric.) The weather was glorious, with the sun powering through a minor heat haze. Definately one of the best days for weather in months !

The ascent of the mountain was tackled in just over 2 hours and was achieved prior to lunch. Excellent views were enjoyed including:
Whernside, Ingleborough, Fountains Fell and Ribblehead viaduct.

After a steep descent we were rewarded with the sight of a bird of prey being exercised in flight by its owner.

To end the walk the Pen-y-Gent cafe refreshed us with pints of tea, coffee or hot chocolate. A good time being had by all.

Regards,
Chris
